AUTHOR’S NOTE: This is one of my “bonus” posts that I will occasionally double-up on in my daily output.

UPDATE: During an online conversation about this reading, someone observed that the 4 of Wands clearly means she is deceased. I responded by saying that I’m not so sure. Aleister Crowley’s idea behind the title for this card wasn’t an ending but a Qabalistic fulfillment (of the manifestation of Binah below the Abyss). In this particular context I think it means whoever has her is feeling secure that he won’t be discovered. As long as he feels safe in his “fulfillment,” she will probably remain alive. But the purpose of this reading was to show her location, not necessarily here condition. It’s been over two years, so he certainly could have used her and disposed of her.

ORIGINAL POST:

I created my “Tarot-Cartography” map of the continental USA mainly for the purpose of choosing ideal places to relocate or vacation. But it struck me yesterday that I might be able to use it in my missing-person work. The idea is to shuffle the deck allowing for reversals and deal one card into each of the eleven positions on the map. If a card is reversed, that location is removed from consideration. Another card is dealt into each remaining position, and once again any reversed-card instances are eliminated. This continues until there is only one sub-pack left with an upright card on top. This is the target location, and any cards beneath the top one can be read as descriptive detail regarding the circumstances at that place. The only scenarios in which this would not work are: 1) the lack of an upright card in the final pull; or 2) the missing individual has been taken out of the country. In those situations no reliable answer can be obtained from this technique.

In the disappearance of Harmony Montgomery of Manchester, NH, the target turned out to be the northern Great Plains region, loosely encompassing the States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and perhaps the eastern “flat-lands” of Montana and Wyoming away from the mountains. Although it’s not an ironclad rule, the urban areas of those States would be the most likely places to look. The archetypal “root” card for this region is Strength (conveniently titled “Lust” in the Thoth tarot I used for the reading), implying that she is being held there by main force for sexual purposes (although with a seven-year-old girl it wouldn’t take much coercion).

The cards that came up randomly in the draw were the Devil (bottom), the 5 of Wands (middle) and the 4 of Wands (top). (To be honest, I couldn’t have chosen more appropriate cards if I had hand-picked them.) The interpretation suggests that there is perversion (Devil) and physical abuse (5 of Wands, here titled “Strife”) going on, all hidden beneath a wholesome domestic facade (4 of Wands). Unless someone slips up, this sort of thing is virtually impossible to spot through casual observation, and the region is too large with few major cities to justify a narrowly-focused search. Another dubious disincentive is that the at-one-time principled rural “heartland” is not where one would expect to find this kind of callous, deviant behavior (although that is definitely a naive assumption in these corrupt times). Nevertheless, this story-line is something to consider.
