The “Weekly Rollercoaster” — A Lenormand Spread
AUTHOR’S NOTE: There is an ongoing discussion on one of the Lenormand sites regarding which spread is best for both short-range and long-range readings. The consensus is that the 36-card Grand Tableau will work just fine for all purposes, including single-subject queries. My personal opinion as a big fan of the GT is that it is most practical for life-reading scenarios that include multiple theme cards, and that the 9-card “box” is better for short-to-mid-range forecasts and narrowly-framed questions. However, this inspired me to create a custom spread for weekly (that is, seven “linked” daily) readings that can be merged to cover a month. The test pull below is a perfect example of the up-and-down nature of this spread, in which each day is not necessarily of the same complexion as the previous one due to the positive, neutral or negative quality of the cards involved.*
It employs a pair of cards for each 24-hour period, a polarized “base” card that describes the overarching theme for the day and a “covering” card of any polarity that suggests how the background influence might play out in “real-time.” Some Lenormand readers prefer to take the cards only in sets of three, which is certainly suitable for this spread but I submit that it may be overthinking because we’re dealing with temporary circumstances that can and will change on a daily basis. Two cards taken as potentially countervailing emphases seems just right for the light touch usually accorded a daily draw.
Another notion I decided not to pursue because it would be a case of gross overkill for daily-reading situations is to deal 21 base cards and 21 covering cards, thus offering a range of positive, neutral and negative themes over the course of any day. However, this would yield a six-card daily draw instead of two and could produce a doubling or tripling of cards in one or two of the positions, both of which seem overbearing to me. Better to stick with the original “7+7” formula; I’m mentioning this because comments I’ve seen so far imply that the structure of the spread is leading some readers to consider doing it.
(*Note that, although there are technically five classes of positive, neutral and negative cards, I’ve lumped together positive and positive-neutral under the “positive” umbrella, while neutral-negative and negative are both placed under the negative header. Neutral stands alone between them. I use the classification system in Andy Boroveshengra’s book, Lenormand, 36 Cards.)
The full reading is a classic “rollercoaster” scenario. Monday looks to be aggravating (Whip) but I should be fine as long as I remain steadfast and “keep a lid on it” (Anchor); Tuesday’s advice is not to get my hopes up (Key) since the day could turn out to be a bit unsettled (Clouds); Wednesday shows the support (Bear) of the Woman in my life; Thursday suggests positive changes (Stork) on the home front (House); Friday will be a day of “righting the ship and sailing on” (Ship) after an initial disturbance (Birds); Saturday looks fabulous all around (Heart + Stars); and Sunday brings the need to deal patiently with some stubborn family matters (Mountain + Lilies). On balance, it doesn’t look like a bad week ahead, with three of the seven covering cards redeeming their negative base cards; the Clouds obscuring the Key on Tuesday is the only obvious “downer.”
