The “Tarot of Place” Situational Outlook Spread
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Here is a spread that takes its design from the directional model of horary astrology while also offering an opportunity to bring the pendulum into play.
In horary astrology, the geographic location of the astrologer and not that of the querent or the “quesited” (that which is being asked about) is a key determinant in setting the coordinates of the horoscope. This spread uses the same assumption in coming up with a “situational landscape” that reflects the environment of the answer and the suggested path to resolution. There are two ways to determine which scenario speaks most precisely to the matter: one is application of various forms of “dignity” (suit, number, rank, element, essential nature, etc.*) between the central card and the “directional” cards, and the other is use of a pendulum. The orientation of the layout is based on astrological principles and not on magnetic compass points, as are the qualities associated with the four cardinal regions (North/Cold/Caution; South/Warm/ Opportunity; East/Unsettled/Difficulty and West/Mild/Inspiration). One basis for this concept is the biblical expression of impending calamity “The wind is in the East,” which is often repeated by John Jarndyce, the lead character in Dickens’ Bleak House, when he supposed that trouble was brewing. This spread can also be used in circumstances involving lost items, missing people, job or home relocation decisions, and travel plans, in which case the directions may be interpreted as physical pointers.
*Elizabeth Hazel’s book Tarot Decoded is a good source for identifying the different types of dignity.
