The “Response-Spectrum Tableau” — A Tarot, Lenormand and Dice Decision-Making Spread
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Here is a mixed-media spread that combines tarot cards with Lenormand cards and dice to come up with a tableau that offers a range of inputs for making an important decision.
Begin by shuffling a Lenormand deck while concentrating on the topic of interest, then deal five cards face-down from left-to-right in the top row. These cards describe the “Pragmatic/Rational Posture” that might be taken in accordance with an “Analytical Worldview” of the subject. The Lenormand cards have a utilitarian focus that makes them well-suited for this application.
Next, shuffle a tarot deck while concentrating, then deal five cards face-down from left-to-right in the bottom row. These cards reflect the “Intuitive/Emotional Posture” that might be taken in accordance with a “Mystical Worldview” of the subject.
Finally, roll a single six-sided die for each two-card column. If it comes up as an odd-numbered array (per Joseph Maxwell, odd numbers are active and seek to regain equilibrium), turn the Lenormand card in that column face-up. The nature of the card will propose the best way to respond in a rational, practical way to the scope of experience defined by the position description at the bottom.
If an even-numbered array comes up (even numbers are passive and harmonious, seeking to maintain balance), turn the tarot card in that column face-up. The nature of the card will propose the best way to respond in an emotional, intuitive way to the experiential scope of the position.
Read these cards as a progression from “Initial Outlook” to “Decision Point,” forming a judgment as to which posture offers the most compelling scenario for reaching the projected conclusion
Below is an imaginary prediction to demonstrate how it works. I did not use reversals in this pull; I never apply them when reading Lenormand so it made little sense to allow them with the tarot cards. I brought a little free-association to bear on the reading, although I tend to use it sparingly and stick with knowledge-based meanings (particularly with the Lenormand cards).
The hypothetical question I asked was “What are my prospects for making a job change?” (For the record, it’s not my present situation; I’m happily retired.)
The tarot Knight of Cups in the “Initial Outlook” position of the “Reactive Response” row indicates “I feel strongly that I must do something for myself in this matter.”
The Lenormand Stars in the “Available Options” position of the “Proactive Response” row suggests that opportunities abound and “the sky’s the limit.”
The Magician in the “Aha! Moment” position of the “Reactive Response” row conveys the realization that “I have far more talent than I’m using in my current job” (basically, I’m over-qualified and under-employed).
The Lenormand Moon in the “Zeroing In” position of the “Proactive Response” row shows that I have my present job “under the microscope.” (Keywords for the Lenormand Moon are “work and reputation.”)
The Lenormand Scythe in the “Decision Point” position of the “Proactive Response” row leaves no doubt that severing ties is the right (and perhaps the inevitable) move.
The advice of this tableau is to “keep my head on straight” and don’t become too emotional about my present circumstances as I pursue a more pragmatically rewarding situation. These cards don’t project what will happen if I decide to quit, just that I will most likely do so on my own initiative.
