The Lenormand Moon: Work, Inspiration or Feelings?

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Apart from the Sun, about which there is little disagreement, the Moon is the only traditional symbol that is common to astrology, tarot and Lenormand.

In his book, Lenormand, Thirty-Six Cards, Andy Boroveshengra gives a couple of different meanings for the Moon card: reputation/honors and work or job, with recognition often arising from successful performance of work assignments This perspective is in no way universal in the Lenormand community since many people see the Fox or the Anchor as the “work” card and the Moon as something else entirely. I tend to agree with Andy that the Moon is “work” while the Anchor is the “career” card and (at least in my own practice) the Fox represents the “skills” (aka the cleverness and maybe the cunning) needed to get ahead in a job. (In more modern terms, it might also symbolize the “Imposter Syndrome,” but the Fox is unlikely to admit any shortcomings and will instead place the blame elsewhere.)

Then there are those people who ascribe the same astrological connotations to the Lenormand Moon as they do to the tarot version, seeing it as emotions of the maternal, nurturing “Hallmark-card” kind. This has always been a head-scratcher for me, and I can only assume that these people are just applying their culturally ingrained attitudes about the “romantic” or “inspirational” Moon rather than making the effort to learn and use alternative meanings. I cringe every time I see someone mention either Moon card as “feelings.”

In my own case, the closest I can come to equating these interpretations is to think of the Lenormand Moon as describing the routine, day-to-day nature of most work activities (or “work” as something the public — another generic Moon keyword — sees us doing on a regular basis); this is a quality it shares with the commonplace or habitual approach to the mundane affairs of life that come under the astrological Moon. This makes sense to me since there is a cross-cutting theme: everyday habits (astrology) and routine, work-related behaviors (Lenornmand); the tarot Moon doesn’t enter into the picture at all. But I don’t interchange the two in my readings, I just find it to be an intriguing parallel. I seriously doubt the correlation was made in late-18th-Century France.

I previously wrote a bit more comprehensively on this subject back in 2017. The popular misconceptions continue unabated and my personal opinion hasn’t changed.
