The “Flatline & Spiral” Attitude Adjustment Spread
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Here is a spread for readers who have trouble making sense of vague or seemingly irrelevant answers from a three-card draw. It requests a “second opinion” from the cards when the outcome of the initial pull does not square with the relative significance of the situation. This is an instance of the “shape” of a spread — in this case a “flatline” trajectory and an ascending or descending spiral — having a lot to say about how it is applied. It uses a structured approach to clarifying cards that is intended to demystify or at least modulate what seem to be irreconcilable differences. Below the spread is an example reading from current affairs.
I asked the question “What will be the condition of the U.S. dollar in world financial markets over the next six months?” I used the Golden Art Nouveau tarot with reversals.
The Star suggests that the United States has been “living in a bubble” regarding the perceived supremacy of the dollar in the international marketplace.
The Fool reversed can only mean a “stumble” (which is already underway as I write this).
The 10 of Swords as the provisional “outcome” card indicates that a crash is imminent. This seems unlikely since it could take down many other currencies with it, so I pulled an “ascending spiral” supplement to see if there is a “bright side” to the prediction
The 8 of Wands reversed looks like a flurry of “crisis management” activity going on behind closed doors. (It will be interesting to see who “gets their knuckles rapped” during the fray.)
The 7 of Wands portrays a strenuous effort to “keep the sharks and wolves away from the sheep” (or at least prevent the bankers from being “fleeced”).
The 10 of Pentacles is cruising along like nothing happened, telling me that there will be no lasting effect from any abrupt but shallow downturn.
The expanded outlook predicts that, while the dollar may be under attack right now (10 of Swords), in the not-too-distant future it will bounce back (10 of Pentacles) although there could be a little “bloodshed” along the way (7 of Wands).
