The “Box of Chocolates” Life-Reading Spread
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Those who have seen the Tom Hanks/Gary Sinise movie Forrest Gump will appreciate the reference in the title.
This spread uses all 78 cards to create a six-card reading in one of thirteen situational and temporal settings as determined by the location of a pre-selected “Significator” card. The four general topic areas are based on elemental and suit meanings. This approach is reminiscent of the First Operation of the Golden Dawn’s “Opening of the Key,” although the method of reading the sequence of cards surrounding the Significator is less formal and is left up to the reader.
The most interesting feature of the spread is the “Wild Card” category that lets the querent decide how the cards pulled relate to the circumstances and the timing of events, with guidance and prompting from the reader as necessary. Another accidental aspect of the pattern is that both of the “active” elemental rows (Fire and Air) contain odd-numbered positions that are also considered active, while the “passive” Water and Earth rows hold similarly passive even-numbered positions. The “Wild Cards” position, as “13,” hints at unpredictability and perhaps chaos, and should be handled with care.
