Sharpening the Focus: A Three-Card Daily Profile Spread

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Here is a simple spread that captures my personal view of the “daily draw.”

As my regular readers know, I don’t have much use for the single-card daily draw because it is entirely too static. Even a three-card pull can be overly generic due to being scattered across a full deck of 78 trump, court and minor cards. It’s like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates: “You never know what you’re gonna get,” and what you receive may only occasionally reflect your private reality.

I decided to come up with a slightly more structured approach that acknowledges three different levels of significance in the affairs of the upcoming day: one detached and personal; one interactive and communal; and one an overarching theme for the 24-hour period. It requires splitting the deck into trump, court and pip sub-packs, then shuffling and dealing them separately to populate the three positions of the layout. Reversals are not used since this spread looks first at opportunities and only secondarily at exposure to upset conditions.

The bottom “pip card” suggests actions that could be worthwhile to consider during the day, or that might be forced on us by events. (In an entirely passive sense, it could just be a weather forecast.)

The middle “court card” indicates interactions with other people that could be initiated, or that may descend on us without our concurrence.

The top “trump card” shows the circumstantial theme, climate or backdrop that will be in effect for the duration. It is not intended to reveal major events, just the general “tone” of the day, although it might set the stage for something more significant. (Think of a thunderstorm brewing on the horizon.)

Here is an example reading, read from bottom-to-top:

The “action” card seems to advise “moping” as the likely order of the day, but it may just mean contemplation of how much has been lost and how much retained. In other words, a sober reckoning. I call this the “take the best and leave the rest” card. To escape the debilitating emotional stress, all one has to do is turn around and notice the two upright cups and the bridge in the background. The next move is obvious.

The King of Swords as the “interaction” card could mean that I will have to “deal with the Man” on this day. It suggests some sort of official encounter that could be benign (registering my vehicle) or threatening (receiving a legal summons). A proactive stance may be the best approach for managing this eventuality. (I am the stern “older male” in most of my encounters, so there is little exposure in that direction.)

The Magican as the “daily theme” card proposes leveraging my skills and talents in handling the matters brought forth by the court and pip cards, as well as being agile and crafty. It would be particularly useful in dealing with that King of Swords since I think of that card as the symbolic “little brother” of the Magician. A good spanking may be in order. (Hmm, my younger brother is coming to visit today, but I don’t think I would take him on.)
