Relationship Dynamics at Three Milestones
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Not every romantic interlude delivers the promise we see in it; prospects may look good at first, but chances for success could fade for a number of reasons. First, a convenient occasion for coupling must present itself; second, both parties must be available to participate; and third, the reality of the situation will eventually assert itself one way or the other. Here is a spread that examines the intentions of two parties to such an intimate rendezvous and the relationship dynamic that exists between them at three key points in development of the scenario.
I’ve populated the spread with randomly-drawn cards describing a hypothetical situation between two people who represent a familiar demographic: Individual #1 is a married man and Individual #2 is a married woman who have feelings for one another, and the woman in particular is looking for a way to get what she wants..
The woman is edging toward making a proposal for an emotional and physical liaison (Knight of Cups “serving the Mistress of Love”), but the Knight is facing away, suggesting shyness in the offering. The man is trying to figure out a way to get to her (6 of Swords) but it doesn’t look encouraging.
Both parties are comfortably situated (King of Pentacles and Empress) but the Hermit between them indicates mutual isolation (they live some distance apart and rarely see one another).
The reality of the situation is that, while there is a very compelling opportunity on the table (Lovers) and the woman is enthusiastic about it (Sun), the man is constrained (9 of Wands).
So what should be done about it? One approach is to calculate the numerological essence for all three columns to see if any kind of convergence shows itself.
The man’s column (as I figure it) totals to 29 (6+14+9), which reduces to 20 (Judgement) by “casting out” one increment of nine, and to 11 (Justice) by Theosophical addition. There is a need for him to “get down to brass tacks” (Justice) in a way that permits no looking back (Judgement).
The woman’s column adds to 34 (12+3+19), which reduces to 16, the Tower, by casting out two increments of nine, and to the Chariot by Theosophical addition. The woman appears to have no qualms about overthrowing her current stability (Tower) in favor of making progress (Chariot) toward her goal.
The Relationship Dynamic column sums to 18 (3+9+6) which yields the Moon with no reduction, or the Hermit by both casting out nines and Theosophical addition. The Moon implies that there is no clear way forward unless the man is able to hold up his end of the bargain by taking control of his own destiny, which — with the 6 of Swords and 9 of Wands — he is plainly uncomfortable about doing. If he can’t or chooses not to, the Hermit will reassert his grip on the unhappy state of separation.
