“Pass-Through” Processing — An Energy Translation Spread
AUTHOR’S NOTE: As I’ve mentioned before, there are several ways to read a three-card line. My favorite is to approach it as a developing scenario that evolves from Point A to Point C, with “processing” of the energy-in-transit to occur at Point B, thus grooming the outcome to achieve its maximum potential. I will sometimes forecast a “long-range result” via the “quintessence” calculation as a fourth “synthesis” card in the reading.
Here is a spread resembling a computer “logic diagram” that places the querent (or the key factor) in the middle position as the “routine” that the situational “input” enters for processing and from which the consequential “output” emerges. This card can be purposely chosen if the seeker is confident in the current status of the situation, or randomly pulled if present conditions are uncertain. (It can also represent the “heart of the matter” in the form of the sitter’s intentions or ambitions). The idea is that raw stimulus, whether invited or unexpected, enters the matter at Point A and must be confronted at Point B, either assertively through active engagement or meditatively through contemplation and mental adaptation, the upshot of which appears at Point C. I decided not to use reversals because the goal here is to explore opportunistic positioning rather than trying to deal with upset conditions.
Here is a random example reading in which the “through-put” card was not selected in advance, followed by one in which it was. Although not shown, I calculated a “quint” card for each line and have provided an interpretation.
In this reading, the “Input” (2 of Wands; Dominion) has to do with a perceived need to exert control in the situation. Adjustment (or Justice) as the “heart of the matter” applies logical limits to just how far that ambition can go before it must be reined in. The Magus (or Magician) in the “Output” position is well-favored to make optimum use of the circumstances he is handed. The “quintessence” in this reading is “11,” Lust (aka Strength or Fortitude), suggesting that a strong display of ego-driven “ Leo brio” will produce lasting results. All of these cards (including the “quint”) are positive and elementally attuned to one another; this implies that — with cautious discretion imparted by Adjustment via the precision of the Magus — “all systems are ‘go’ for launch” with an eye toward not “overshooting the mark.”
Here I intentionally chose “Lust” for the “processing” position before I knew that it would be the “quintessence” card for the first reading; I would typically see this as a “validation” of both pulls. The emphasis is on assuming a strong posture in dealing with the incoming influence. The “Input” card shows what Lust has to work with and here it is the 8 of Wands (Swiftness), indicating a highly volatile and possibly unruly energy that can’t be allowed to get out of hand. The Ace of Cups in the “Output” position gives the impression that the result will be emotionally gratifying; however, it is elementally hostile to both the 8 of Wands and Lust, portending an uncomfortable transition. The “quint” card is “20,” the Aeon (or Judgement), which usually means “taking a definite step” in a new direction without looking back on the past. If an opportunity presents itself, it could be worth pursuing with the understanding that there is no going back.
