A Single-Event Predictive Approach
AUTHOR’S NOTE: I was recently answering a question on one of the tarot forums about the best way to cover pragmatic topics in a “predictive” type of tarot reading.
I’ve always been partial to the “Five W’s” of effective creative writing that were drilled into me in high school: “Who, What, Why, Where and When?” although I recognize that not all of them are perfectly suited to a divination setting. I generally stick with “What will happen?” and “Why will it happen?” along with a foray into “How will it happen?” and, when applicable to the context, “Who else has a say in the matter?” Beyond those staples, “When will it happen?” is occasionally useful but not always very accurate, and “Where will it happen?” almost never comes up unless someone is contemplating a new job in a “to-be-determined” location, a potential cross-country move to an as-yet undecided destination or an off-the-cuff vacation.
Here is a very simple spread (three cards with three optional considerations) that explores: 1) an emerging situation that is known to some extent in advance or is assumed to be coming but not yet grasped; 2) the qualitative personal, environmental and (if necessary) social dimensions of its scope and impact; and 3) a likely explanation for its occurrence in just that form and no other. There is very little developmental content in this spread, just a statement of the opening scenario and highlights of two or three of the most telling features of its progress; therefore it is best used for very narrow single-event predictions. The supplemental aspects that purport to define the time and place of the outcome are entirely optional and up to the individual reader and querent. There are no psychological objectives in this spread, no real timeline and no “end of the matter” position (unless seeking a “when-and-where” answer), just an in-process “slice of the action”that the querent can use to anticipate what’s about to transpire and hopefully to address it most effectively while it’s still fluid.
