2,001: A Tarot Odyssey

AUTHOR’S NOT E: The adventure of the title began in 2017 when I started this blog and reached a zenith with post #2,000 at the conclusion of my “tarot alchemy” series two days ago. Yesterday, post #2,001 — although little different from the 242 consecutive daily essays that preceded it — opened what I intend to be new chapter in my work, so I thought a renewed “mission statement” is in order. Here is a summary of my objectives, all of which will ideally inspire me to new heights of analysis and explication.

Continue to expand the scope of my tarot writing by reading historical and modern literature with a critical eye and producing commentary that is useful in routine practice.

Increase my study and use of divination techniques other than tarot that I turn to only rarely, particularly I Ching, geomancy and pendulum.

Become more systematic in applying methods that I now exercise sporadically, such as horary astrology and Lenormand.

Explore more fully some of the subjects like runes, crystal-ball scrying and lithomancy that I’ve only touched on briefly in the past.

Make a more concerted effort to find or create a local community for the exchange of ideas.

Augment my knowledge of tarot history through selected reading.

Diligently forage online discussion groups for intelligent questions and other points of interest that can be fashioned into illuminating essays.

Seriously consider writing “that tarot book” that people keep encouraging me to tackle. (The five e-books I’ve already published are compilations of essays and, except for the “Tarot 101” and “Hermetic tarot” material, aren’t comprehensive in scope.)

Look for opportunities to lecture and teach tarot, while also expanding my regular practice (which has largely disappeared since COVID). Also, take a fresh look at online reading approaches that meet my personal criteria for authenticity.

Seek formal, in-person learning venues for topics like runes that I want to explore more seriously.

The main thrust of this initiative will be to learn new concepts and refresh old ones that will advance my thinking in ways that can be captured in my chosen blog format of the “three-paragraph essay” (although I’ve enlarged that footprint considerably over the past year). Hopefully I can keep it interesting for my long-time followers.
